Abilene may not be the capital of Texas, but it has a wide variety of attractions that are certain to appeal to visitors of all ages. From seeing some friendly animals to experiencing all the wonders Abilene has to offer, a visit here in never boring!   • Abilene Zoo – Getting up close and personal with a giraffe isn’t something most zoos appreciate. Fortunately, the Abilene Zoo isn’t most zoos. Visitors can feed the giraffes romaine lettuce from the Twiga Terrace. The zoo is home to more than 1,000 animals and features many exotic exhibits, including alligators, zebras, and bears.
  • 12th Armored Division Museum – Listen to the stories of World War II at the 12th Armored Division Museum. Abilene hosted Camp Barkeley, known as the base for the 12th Armored Division. Known as the Hellcats, the division fought throughout Europe, including participating in the D-Day invasion. Three floors feature artifacts, personal experiences, and photographs of a more personal history.
  • “Storybook Capital of Texas” – Downtown Abilene is home to art galleries, museums, and a unique scavenger hunt. Visitors can search the area for the Lorax, Cat in the Hat, and other classic children’s characters. The statues are the reason that Abilene is known as the Storybook Capital of Texas.
