The Chevy Silverado Crankshaft: Polished to Perfection

Chevy engineers have an incredible attention to detail, so much so that they have recently begun to focus on microscopic imperfections in every model. When it comes to engines like the 5.3-liter V-8 EcoTec3, Chevy has taken the liberty of polishing parts smooth in order to provide optimum performance.

Although the parts are perfect to the naked eye, Chevy has stressed the importance of polishing out microscopic imperfection which can cause unnecessary friction or wear. In particular, engineers have been focusing on the Chevy Silverado crankshaft, which converts power from the engine to rotational energy.

“There are good reasons behind this polishing,” said Anthony Lewandowski, manufacturing engineer at Tonawanda Engine. “Micropolishing the crank’s journals improves the oil film’s consistency to reduce friction and improve the EcoTec3’s reliability and durability over the life of the truck.”

By reducing friction, this not only reduces wear, but can also increase performance. It’s attention to detail like this that gives the Silverado over 355-horsepower. Stop by Hanner Chevrolet to see the EcoTec3 in action in models like the Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban.
